WAV keeps every sample. That is ideal for editing, and terrible for sharing: a three-minute recording can be 30 MB. MP3 at 192 kbps is usually around a tenth of that, with a difference most people will not hear on laptop speakers.
This tool decodes the audio in your browser with the Web Audio API and encodes MP3 with LAME. Use 192 kbps for music, 128 kbps for voice, 256 kbps if you want extra headroom.
MP3 is lossy. For speech and most music, 192 kbps is a solid default. Keep the WAV if you still need to edit.
